Olabisi Onabanjo University Senate at its 417th (emergency) meeting held on Friday, 17th February 2023 considered the directive of the National Universities Commission (NUC) that Academic activities be suspended during the forthcoming 2023 General Elections.

Olabisi Onabanjo University, also known as OOU, is a public tertiary institution located in Ogun State, Nigeria. The university is known for its academic excellence and is home to thousands of students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate programs. However, the university is forced to suspend its academic activities due to the 2023 general elections.

Elections in Nigeria are known to be highly contentious, with political parties and candidates vying for power at all levels of government. During election periods, there is a heightened sense of tension in the country, as parties and candidates engage in various forms of campaigns and rallies to mobilize support.

This tension also affects academic institutions like OOU, as the institution becomes a hotbed for political activities. Political parties and candidates often make use of the institution’s facilities for campaigns and rallies, which can disrupt academic activities and create an unsafe environment for students and staff.

To prevent any form of disruption and ensure the safety of students and staff, the management of OOU took the decision to suspend academic activities during the 2023 general elections. The suspension of academic activities was in line with the directive of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which requested all academic institutions to suspend academic activities during the elections.

The suspension affected all academic activities, including lectures, seminars, and examinations. The university also suspended all extra-curricular activities, including sports and other recreational activities.

While the suspension of academic activities caused some inconvenience for students and staff, it was necessary to ensure their safety and security. The suspension allowed the institution to make adequate arrangements for security and crowd control during the elections. The suspension also allowed students and staff to participate in the electoral process without fear of any form of violence or harassment.

The suspension of academic activities at OOU was not unique to the institution, as many other academic institutions in Nigeria also suspended academic activities during the elections. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff, as well as to prevent any form of disruption to academic activities.

Continuation of virtual lectures

Although the school will be going on a break, there will be a continuation of virtual lectures via the Microsoft teams app 

What does this mean for TACSFON OOU?

TACSFON OOU is a Christian fellowship for students in Olabisi Onabanjo University and since the school is on 3 weeks break, we have no other choice than to go on break too. 

The church will be suspending all her activities on the 19th of February and will be back in operation on the 26th of March, 2023.
